SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificates are an absolute must-have on any ecommerce website. Think online shopping – you wouldn’t buy anything from a website that doesn’t have the green padlock icon, would you?
SSL technology encrypts the information going between your computer and the website you’re visiting so that anyone eavesdropping on traffic won’t be able to see the information that’s sent back and forth. It also gives website users the knowledge that their information is secure and that the website is who it says it is.
SSL For All
It’s now become even more important for non-ecommerce websites too. In an effort to stamp out phishing attempts and bad practices, Google will begin to inform visitors that they are visiting an unsecured website, ie one without a valid SSL certificate.
The only thing is, SSL certificates can cost money. The level of service you want from an SSL certificate dictates just how expensive that will be. So for the average non-ecommerce website – which might typically exist as a hobby website, blog, or non-profit – the money sometimes isn’t there.
This is where Let’s Encrypt comes in. It’s a free, automated, and openCertificate Authority. It gives everyone the chance to obtain an SSL certificate at no cost, and it automatically renews itself too. You can read more about it here: https://letsencrypt.org/about/
